What is STTORMM?

STTORMM is an accredited provider of employment-based initial teacher training (ITT) programmes located in the Manchester area. STTORMM is a partnership of Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Oldham, Rochdale and Manchester Local Authorities, and Manchester Metropolitan University.

STTORMM supports two types of training programme:

  • the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is designed for career changers and those with significant experience of schools who wish to train as teachers. Training is based in schools rather than higher education institutions (HEIs); and
  • the Overseas-trained Teacher Programme (OTTP) is a programme of support, monitoring and assessment for those who are recognised as qualified teachers in their home countries and are now employed as teachers in schools in England.

Employment-based ITT programmes are alternatives to PGCE training which is located in HEIs. These programmes are available in both the state and independent sectors.

Employment-based ITT programmes conclude with an assessment for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS). Assessments for the award of QTS are made against the professional standards for qualified teacher status which are published by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). The Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status are usually known as the Q Standards.
